Significant setback for South Africa as essential fast bowler withdrawn from ICC Champions Trophy 2025
South Africa has faced yet another setback to their fast-bowling options after right-arm pacer Gerald Coetzee has been excluded from the forthcoming tri-nation ODI series and the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025. The tournament, set to occur in Pakistan from February 19 to March 9, will now proceed without the 24-year-old pace bowler.
Previously, fast bowler Anrich Nortje was excluded due to a back injury, and other pace bowlers like Nandre Burger, Lizaad Williams, Daryn Dupavillon, and Ottneil Baartman have also been affected by injuries recently, resulting in a significant depletion of South Africa’s bowling resources.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced that Coetzee, selected for the Proteas squad for their first game of the tri-nation series versus New Zealand, felt groin tightness while training. The quick bowler was evaluated by the team’s medical personnel, who concluded that the injury could lead to a more significant issue, particularly given the heightened demands of the 50-over format.
According to CSA’s announcement, “The 24-year-old felt tightness in his groin while finishing his 10 overs during training on Wednesday morning at the Centre of Excellence in Pretoria.”
“After additional evaluation by the Proteas medical staff, it was concluded that the symptoms represented a heightened risk of serious injury due to the increased bowling workload needed for the upcoming 50-over games,” CSA stated in a release.
“Consequently, Coetzee will not be eligible for selection for the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025,” CSA stated in a release.
Sources indicate that emerging fast-bowling all-rounder Corbin Bosch and right-arm bowler Lutho Sipamla are key contenders to take Coetzee’s place in the eight-team competition.
