Kathmandu, September 23, 2026, Nepali boxer Khagendra Roka Magar gave Nepal its first boxing victory at the 20th Asian Games on Wednesday, defeating Macau’s Alvin John Reyes Salinas 5–0 in the men’s 60kg preliminary round at Nishio Gymnasium in Japan. The victory came after three Nepali boxers had lost their opening bouts, giving Nepal an important breakthrough in its boxing campaign.
Khagendra Wins All Five Judges
Khagendra delivered a strong performance across the three-round contest and earned the decision of all five judges for a unanimous 5–0 victory. The result allowed him to move forward in the men’s 60kg competition and gave Nepal its first boxing success at the Games.
Nepal Finally Finds a Boxing Win
Khagendra entered the ring after a difficult opening for Nepal’s boxing team. Dan Bahadur Darlami lost 5–0 to Iraq’s Ali Qasim Hamdan Al-Sarray in the men’s 70kg division, while Ramisha Shrestha was defeated 5–0 by Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Tam in the women’s 51kg category.
Nepal’s world championship bronze medalist Chandra Bahadur Thapa Magar also suffered a 5–0 defeat against India’s Jadumani Singh Mandengbam in the men’s 55kg preliminary round.
Seven Boxers Represent Nepal
Nepal has fielded seven boxers at the Asian Games: Khagendra Roka Magar, Chandra Bahadur Thapa Magar, Dan Bahadur Darlami, Rabin Nepal, Ramisha Shrestha, Asmita Duwal and Kusum Tamang.
Ahead of the competition, the Nepali boxing team completed a high-performance training camp in Guwahati, India, focusing on technical skills, fitness, tactics and competition preparation.
Boxing Has Delivered Asian Games Medals
Boxing has an important place in Nepal’s Asian Games history. Nepali boxers have previously won medals at the continental event, but the country has gone several editions without adding another Asian Games boxing medal.
Khagendra’s opening victory now gives Nepal another opportunity to progress deeper into the competition as he prepares for his next bout.
