Chinese animated film Niu Lai has turned from an almost ignored theatrical release into one of China's most unusual viral box-office stories after its crude animation and unconventional storytelling became a social-media sensation. Made over about five years by director Xin Yumeng and his mother Sun Lifang, the film's weaknesses unexpectedly became its biggest marketing tool as audiences began buying tickets out of curiosity.
