Kylian Mbappé Becomes FIFA World Cup's All Time Top Scorer After Reaching 22 Goals
Kylian Mbappé made World Cup history by becoming the tournament’s all time leading scorer with 22 goals, despite France’s 6 to 4 defeat to England.

Kylian Mbappé added another remarkable achievement to his career by becoming the highest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history. The France captain scored twice against England in the 2026 FIFA World Cup third place playoff, taking his overall World Cup tally to 22 goals and moving past Lionel Messi's previous record of 21.
Although France lost the thrilling match 6-4, Mbappé's performance secured his place in football history. The 27 year old has now scored in three different World Cups, continuing his incredible record on the biggest stage.
Record Built Across Three World Cups
Mbappé's record has been built with consistent performances over three FIFA World Cup tournaments.
His World Cup goals include:
2018 Russia: 4 goals
2022 Qatar: 8 goals
2026 USA Canada Mexico: 10 goals
His total of 22 World Cup goals is now the highest ever scored by a player in the competition, breaking Lionel Messi's previous mark of 21 goals.
Golden Boot Race Still In His Hands
The two goals against England also pushed Mbappé to 10 goals in the 2026 tournament, leaving him at the top of the Golden Boot standings before the World Cup final.
Argentina captain Lionel Messi still has one match left to play in the final against Spain and could reduce the gap, but Mbappé currently leads the race for the tournament's top scorer.
France Falls Despite Mbappé's Brilliance
France's campaign ended in disappointment despite Mbappé's historic night. England raced into a four goal lead before France fought back in the second half. Mbappé scored twice to inspire the comeback, but England eventually secured a dramatic 6 - 4 victory to finish third in the tournament.
The match was also the final game for France coach Didier Deschamps after more than a decade in charge of the national team.
Another Record In A Legendary Career
This latest milestone adds to a growing list of achievements for Mbappé. Earlier in the tournament, he also became France's all time leading international goalscorer by moving past Olivier Giroud.
At just 27 years old, Mbappé continues to rewrite football history and is already regarded as one of the greatest World Cup players of all time. With several years of football still ahead of him, his new scoring record could become even harder to break.
