Mbappé Reaches 20 World Cup Goals Faster Than Any Player In History

Kylian Mbappé, the captain of France, created history during his country's 2-0 quarter-final win over Morocco at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America by becoming the first player to score 20 World Cup goals in only 20 matches. At just 27 years old, he achieved the milestone earlier and faster than any previous player, while his goal helped France secure a place in the semi-finals and continue their push for another World Cup title.

The French forward has now scored 12 goals in World Cup knockout matches, the highest total ever recorded in the competition's decisive rounds. His latest strike also took his tally at the ongoing tournament to eight goals, equalling the number he scored when he won the Golden Boot at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Mbappé has also become the first footballer to score at least eight goals in two separate World Cup editions. Across his three appearances at the tournament in 2018, 2022 and 2026, he has already won the World Cup once, finished as a runner-up once and established himself as one of the most dangerous forwards in the competition's history.

With 20 goals from 20 appearances, Mbappé now averages one goal per World Cup match. He is also close to the top of the all-time scoring chart and still has further opportunities to increase his tally as France prepare for the semi-finals.

His rise has placed him at the centre of football's next generation of global stars. While Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo defined the previous era, Mbappé's achievements suggest he could eventually finish his career as the most successful goalscorer in World Cup history.
