Roma Carry Nepal’s Message Onto Champions League Stage

Italian football club AS Roma will wear the World Food Programme (WFP) logo and a “Together for Nepal” message on their shirts when they face Fenerbahçe in Istanbul on Thursday, September 10, in the opening matchday of the UEFA Champions League league phase. Roma and WFP have joined forces to raise international awareness and humanitarian support for communities affected by the devastating floods and landslides in Nepal, where around 43,000 people need urgent humanitarian assistance.

Special Shirts Dedicated To Nepal

The European fixture will carry a message extending far beyond football, with Roma dedicating their shirts to people affected by the disaster in Nepal.

The World Food Programme logo will appear on the front of Roma’s shirts as the club helps bring attention to the humanitarian emergency and the work being carried out by WFP. The initiative carries the message “Together for Nepal,” showing solidarity with communities struggling after the floods and landslides.

Around 43,000 Need Urgent Humanitarian Assistance

The disaster has severely affected several parts of Nepal, with damaged roads and infrastructure leaving some communities isolated and making the delivery of humanitarian assistance more difficult.

According to Roma and WFP, around 43,000 people are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance. WFP has been supporting the Government-led emergency response with food assistance and logistical support, particularly to help relief efforts reach badly affected and isolated communities.

WFP said emergency food assistance was dispatched and distributed to affected areas within hours of the disaster, while specialist logistics teams have also been deployed to support the wider humanitarian response.

Roma’s Support Will Continue After The Match

Roma’s initiative will not end when the final whistle is blown in Istanbul.

The shirts worn by Gian Piero Gasperini’s players during the match against Fenerbahçe will be auctioned after the game, with all funds raised going towards supporting people in Nepal through WFP’s relief efforts.

The auction will turn the special shirts into a fundraising effort for communities still requiring humanitarian assistance following the disaster.

Football Fans Can Also Help Nepal

Supporters around the world will also have an opportunity to contribute directly.

Roma said fans can support the emergency response through ShareTheMeal, WFP’s fundraising platform. The initiative gives Roma supporters and the wider football community another way to contribute towards food and humanitarian assistance for people affected in Nepal.

A Global Stage For Nepal

Roma’s match against Fenerbahçe will be played at Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium in Istanbul, giving Nepal’s humanitarian situation visibility on one of football’s biggest international stages.

By carrying the WFP logo and the “Together for Nepal” message, Roma are using their Champions League appearance to draw attention to communities still facing the consequences of the disaster and to support ongoing relief efforts.
