Cholendra Rana Placed Under Police Protection After Security Threat Alert, Police Clarify It Was Not An Arrest

KATHMANDU: Nepal Police has clarified that former Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana has not been arrested and was instead placed under police protection following information about a possible threat to his personal safety.

Senior Superintendent of Police Santosh Khadka, chief of the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office in Teku, said Rana was brought under police watch after authorities received emergency information suggesting a possible security risk.

Police Say Move Was For Safety, Not Arrest

SSP Khadka clarified that the action was taken only to ensure Rana’s safety.

“This is certainly not an arrest. We received information about some threat concerning him. We brought him here only for his security. It is not an arrest,” Khadka said.

According to police, Rana is currently under protection and authorities are assessing further security arrangements.

Security Assessment Underway

Police said they are evaluating the nature of the reported threat and considering arrangements to provide security at Rana’s residence if necessary.

SSP Khadka said details about the source and nature of the threat have not been made public at this stage, as revealing sensitive security information could create additional risks.

Earlier Reports Raised Questions Over Rana’s Status

Earlier reports about Rana being taken by police had raised questions about whether he had been arrested or placed under restrictions.

However, police officials have now stated that Rana’s movement was related to a security concern and not connected to any arrest.

Authorities are expected to determine the next security steps after completing an assessment of the reported threat.

Police have said protecting Rana’s safety remains the immediate priority while further details are reviewed.
