From Slow Start to Rs 7 Crore: ‘Pension Patta’ Finds Its Audience

Nepali film ‘Pension Patta,’ written and directed by Maotse Gurung and led by Dayahang Rai and Gaumaya Gurung, reached a reported gross collection of Rs 7 Crore 1 Lakh by Sunday, September 27, after releasing across Nepal on September 11. Producers say more than 244,000 viewers have watched the film, with particularly strong business in Pokhara and other areas with deep connections to the Lahure community, as audiences respond to its story centered on family, identity and the realities surrounding pension documents.

A Strong Rise After Opening

The film's box-office journey has grown considerably since its opening days. It had collected Rs 1 Crore 50 Lakh 13 Thousand by its fifth day, according to figures provided at the time by director and producer Maotse Gurung.

By September 20, publicly reported Film Development Board box-office figures showed its domestic gross had reached Rs 3 Crore 79 Lakh 76 Thousand, with 129,118 tickets sold. The latest producer figures now put the collection at Rs 7 Crore 1 Lakh and the audience above 244,000.

Pokhara Emerges as a Major Market

Pokhara has been one of the strongest markets for the film. Earlier in its theatrical run, the movie had already generated more than Rs 51 Lakh from Pokhara, and producers now say its collection in the city alone has crossed Rs 1 crore.

The strong response is notable because Pokhara and surrounding areas have long-standing connections with Gurkha and Lahure families, whose experiences are closely linked to the film's central subject.

A Story Rooted in Lahure Life

‘Pension Patta’ revolves around a family whose life becomes complicated by a pension document following the death of the father. What begins as an attempt to claim a pension develops into a wider journey involving identity, family relationships, financial hardship and personal change.

Director Maotse Gurung has said the film was made partly from a desire to bring stories associated with Lahure life to a wider Nepali audience. The story uses the pension issue as the starting point while exploring the social and emotional experiences surrounding the family.

Dayahang and Gaumaya Lead the Cast

The film features Dayahang Rai and Gaumaya Gurung in leading roles. Its ensemble cast also includes Wilson Bikram Rai, Buddhi Tamang, Pashupati Rai, Bishwas Gurung, Maya Gurung, Pushkar Bahadur Gurung, Lunibha Tuladhar and the late Sunil Thapa, among others.

Produced under Maotse Gurung Films, the movie was produced by Min Konme Gurung, Bhoj Bahadur Gurung, Maya Gurung and Sapana Gurung.

Beyond Nepal

The film's journey is also expanding outside Nepal. Plans announced during its theatrical run included screenings in Australia and Barcelona, Spain, taking its story to Nepali communities overseas.

For a movie built around a distinctly Nepali story of Lahure families, pensions and identity, its continued theatrical run shows how a locally rooted subject can connect with audiences both at home and abroad.
