Government Allocates Rs 6.54 Billion to Upgrade 109 Community Schools Across Nepal

Kathmandu, October 14, 2026: The government has allocated Rs 6.54 billion in the current fiscal year to improve infrastructure at 109 community schools, targeting schools with more than 2,000 students each.

According to the secretariat of Education and Sports Minister Sasmit Pokhrel, the funding will be used to construct modern school buildings and expand existing infrastructure at community schools experiencing high student enrolment.

Rs 5.34 Billion Already Released

In the first phase, the government has already released Rs 5.34 billion to 89 schools.

The ministry said the funding will be used to construct a three-storey, 12-room building at each selected school.

Each building is estimated to cost around Rs 60 million and will include classrooms, laboratories and a library, providing additional space and facilities for students and teachers.

Schools With Over 2,000 Students Prioritized

The government has focused the program on community schools with more than 2,000 students, where existing infrastructure may be under greater pressure because of high enrolment.

Minister Pokhrel said it is encouraging to see some community schools attracting large numbers of students, while acknowledging that other schools are facing the opposite problem and struggling with low enrolment.

The government has therefore begun by improving infrastructure at larger schools while planning broader efforts to address differences among community schools.

Government Aims to Reduce Gaps Between Schools

Pokhrel said the government will work to improve both the quality of education and physical infrastructure at community schools in the coming days.

The broader aim will be to reduce disparities between schools and improve the learning environment available to students.

He also emphasized that infrastructure alone will not be enough to improve community education.

According to Pokhrel, cooperation among teachers, parents and students will also be important for improving educational quality and strengthening community schools.
