Home Minister Says Investigation Found No Evidence Of Torture In Sindhuli Custody Death Case
Home Minister Sudan Gurung informed the National Assembly that investigations and the postmortem report regarding the death of Shreekrishna Bik in Sindhuli police custody found no evidence of physical or mental torture by police. The minister also announced that Nepal Police has introduced a Dalit Cell to improve the handling of cases involving caste discrimination and other sensitive social issues.

The government has shared findings from an investigation into the death of Shreekrishna Bik, who died while being held in police custody in Sindhuli, stating that the inquiry did not find evidence of physical or psychological abuse by police personnel.
Speaking in the National Assembly on Friday, Home Minister Sudan Gurung responded to questions raised by lawmakers regarding the incident. He said a special investigation committee led by a Deputy Inspector General (DIG) had been formed to examine the circumstances surrounding the case.
According to the minister, both the committee's findings and the postmortem report were reviewed during the investigation. He stated that the medical report indicated findings consistent with suicide and that investigators did not identify evidence suggesting that the deceased had been subjected to torture while in custody.
The Home Ministry said recommendations made by the investigation team have already been forwarded to the Nepal Police Headquarters and the District Administration Office in Sindhuli for further implementation and follow-up.
During the discussion, Gurung also highlighted measures being introduced to address cases involving caste-based discrimination and other socially sensitive issues. He said Nepal Police has begun implementing a dedicated Dalit Cell aimed at improving victim-focused investigations and strengthening public confidence in law enforcement.
The new mechanism is expected to function in a manner similar to existing units that handle cases involving women, children, and senior citizens, with a focus on providing accessible support and investigation services.
The minister added that concerns raised by lawmakers regarding the incident have been taken seriously by the government. He stated that authorities will continue reviewing any additional information related to the case and will keep Parliament informed of further developments if necessary.
