Why Did Nepal’s Court Grant Shekhar Golchha Bail? Here’s What The Case Is Really About
Businessman Shekhar Golchha has been released after the Kathmandu District Court ordered him to furnish Rs 1 crore in bail following a detention hearing related to insurance and securities offence cases. The criminal cases, based on a Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) investigation, will continue in court while Golchha remains out on bail after submitting a bank guarantee.

Businessman Shekhar Golchha has been released after the Kathmandu District Court decided he could remain out of custody by furnishing Rs 1 crore in bail. The decision came on Tuesday following a detention hearing before Judge Pratima Kumari Bhattarai Pokharel in Kathmandu. The court fixed Rs 75 lakh as bail for an insurance-related offence and Rs 25 lakh for a securities-related offence. Golchha secured his release by submitting a bank guarantee. The cases stem from an investigation carried out by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), which later filed its report before the court.
How The Case Reached Court
The legal case was formally registered at the Kathmandu District Court on Jestha 28 after investigators completed their inquiry. Prosecutors claim the evidence gathered during the CIB investigation was sufficient to pursue charges under Nepal's insurance and securities laws. The detention hearing was held to determine whether Golchha should remain in custody during the trial or be released under bail conditions.
Other Individuals Also Face Proceedings
Golchha is among several individuals linked to the same investigation. Earlier, the court also directed Deepak Bhatt and Sulabh Agrawal to furnish bail in relation to the case. Their involvement highlights that the investigation extends beyond a single individual and focuses on alleged financial irregularities involving multiple parties.
What The Bail Order Means
The court's decision should not be interpreted as a judgment on the allegations. Bail simply allows an accused person to remain free while attending future court hearings and complying with legal conditions. The prosecution will continue presenting its evidence, while the defence will have an opportunity to challenge the claims before the court delivers its final decision.
Why This Case Is Significant
The proceedings have attracted widespread attention because they involve one of Nepal's leading business personalities. The outcome could become an important reference point for future investigations involving corporate governance, financial regulation, and accountability within Nepal's insurance and securities sectors.
