How Much Do Nepal’s Top Judges and Constitutional Officials Earn? Government Sets New Salaries

The Government of Nepal has fixed new monthly salaries for judges, senior judicial officials and officials of constitutional bodies, with the Ministry of Finance publishing the revised rates in the Nepal Gazette. Effective from Shrawan 1, 2083, the new structure sets the Chief Justice’s monthly salary at Rs 112,522, while Supreme Court judges and several other senior officials receive Rs 93,547, as the government updates remuneration for some of the country’s highest public offices.

Chief Justice Tops the Salary List

Under the newly published rates, the Chief Justice receives Rs 112,522 per month, making it the highest salary among the judicial positions covered by the new schedule.

Supreme Court judges receive Rs 93,547 per month. Members of the Judicial Council and the Attorney General are also placed at Rs 93,547 per month.

For comparison, the Chief Justice’s previous monthly salary was Rs 102,293, while Supreme Court judges received Rs 85,043, under rates applicable from Shrawan 1, 2079.

What High Court and District Judges Receive

The revised salary structure also covers judges working below the Supreme Court.

A High Court chief judge receives Rs 90,640 per month, while a High Court judge receives Rs 84,590.

District Court judges have been placed at Rs 77,110 per month.

These figures represent basic monthly salary rates and should not be confused with the total value of compensation once legally provided facilities and allowances are included.

Constitutional Officials Get New Rates

The changes extend beyond the judiciary.

Heads of constitutional bodies receive Rs 93,547 per month, while other officials serving in those bodies receive Rs 85,426.

The government has historically set separate salary scales for senior judicial officials, constitutional officeholders and other high-ranking state positions through notices published in the Nepal Gazette.

Federal Parliament Officials Included

Senior administrative officials of the Federal Parliament are also covered.

The Secretary General of the Federal Parliament receives Rs 84,932 per month, while parliamentary secretaries receive Rs 79,290 under the new structure.

Salary Is Only Part of the Package

The monthly figures do not necessarily represent the complete value of the benefits available to senior judicial officials.

The Chief Justice has an official residence in Baluwatar, while Supreme Court judges have in recent years used government residential quarters in Pulchowk. Judges who are not provided residential facilities may receive a housing allowance under the applicable rules.

Depending on the position and applicable law, officials may also receive facilities or allowances covering vehicles, fuel, electricity, water, telephone, travel and clothing. Such benefits are separate from the basic monthly salary.

How Much Have Salaries Increased?

The latest figures show increases across all major levels of the judiciary compared with the salary rates applicable from Shrawan 1, 2079.

The Chief Justice’s monthly salary has increased from Rs 102,293 to Rs 112,522, a rise of Rs 10,229 per month, or around 10%.

Supreme Court judges now receive Rs 8,504 more per month, while the biggest increase among the listed judicial positions is for District Court judges, whose basic salary has risen by Rs 12,215 per month.

The comparison shows that while the Chief Justice remains the highest-paid judicial official, District Court judges received the largest increase in rupee terms among the five positions listed above.

The new salaries apply from Shrawan 1, 2083, meaning the revised rates are effective from the beginning of the current fiscal year.
