Norwegian Ambassador Meets Energy Minister To Discuss Nepal’s Next Phase Of Energy Development

Norwegian Ambassador to Nepal Dagny Mjøs paid a courtesy call on Minister of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Biraj Bhakta Shrestha on Wednesday, with both sides discussing Nepal’s next phase of energy sector development.

The meeting focused on key priorities for Nepal’s energy future, including the productive use of electricity, stronger transmission and distribution systems, improved energy efficiency and better institutional capacity. According to the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Kathmandu, the talks highlighted the need to make Nepal’s electricity sector more reliable, affordable and sustainable.

During the meeting, Ambassador Mjøs and Minister Shrestha discussed how Nepal can make better use of its growing electricity production. Productive use of electricity is seen as an important part of economic growth, as it can support industries, businesses, agriculture and households. Better use of electricity can also help Nepal reduce dependence on other energy sources and create more opportunities within the country.

The discussion also covered the importance of strengthening transmission and distribution infrastructure. A strong power system is necessary to carry electricity from production areas to homes, industries and markets. Nepal has been working to improve its energy infrastructure so that electricity supply can become more stable and reach more people.

Energy efficiency was another major issue discussed during the meeting. Improving energy efficiency can help reduce waste, lower costs and make better use of available power. The two sides also talked about building stronger institutional capacity, which is important for planning, managing and expanding Nepal’s energy sector in a more effective way.

Ambassador Mjøs and Minister Shrestha also reaffirmed the long partnership between Nepal and Norway. Both sides expressed their shared commitment to supporting reliable, affordable and sustainable energy in Nepal. The meeting also underlined the role of energy development in supporting Nepal’s economic growth and strengthening regional energy cooperation.

Norway has been a long standing development partner of Nepal, and energy has remained one of the important areas of cooperation between the two countries. Wednesday’s meeting showed that both Nepal and Norway are ready to continue working together to support a stronger and more sustainable energy future for Nepal.
