Who Was Pur Bahadur Gurung?

Nepal has lost one of its most accomplished mountain guides with the passing of Pur Bahadur Gurung, widely known in the climbing community as Yukta. His death, confirmed following the Broad Peak avalanche in Pakistan, has left climbers and expedition teams across the world mourning the loss of a man whose life was dedicated to Nepal's mountains and the people who climbed them.

A Career Built Above The Clouds

For years, Gurung earned a reputation as one of Nepal's trusted high-altitude professionals. Throughout his career, he successfully guided climbers on 28 expeditions above 8,000 metres and personally reached the summits of 12 of the world's 14 eight-thousanders, including Everest, K2 and Annapurna I. He also completed numerous climbs on technical peaks such as Ama Dablam and Himlung, becoming known for his calm leadership and deep understanding of Himalayan terrain.

A Historic First For Nepal

One of the defining moments of Gurung's climbing career came in December 2023, when he and fellow mountaineer Prakash Gurung completed the first recorded ascent of Khumjungar (6,759 metres) in Nepal's Damodar Himal. The expedition added a previously unclimbed Himalayan peak to Nepal's mountaineering history and highlighted Gurung's passion for exploration beyond commercial expeditions.

More Than A Mountaineer

Away from the mountains, Gurung devoted time to community service as the Founder President of Mission Community Help Foundation Nepal. Friends and colleagues remember him not only as an exceptional climber but also as someone who willingly mentored younger guides, supported local communities and promoted responsible mountaineering.

Pur Bahadur Gurung's achievements cannot be measured only by the peaks he climbed. His professionalism, humility and dedication helped strengthen Nepal's reputation as home to some of the world's finest mountain guides. While his journey has ended, the routes he opened, the climbers he inspired and the lives he touched will continue to shape the mountaineering community for years to come.
