Missing Former Mayor Found Dead

KAPILVASTU, August 9, 2026 — Former Kapilvastu Municipality mayor and Nepali Congress leader Kiran Singh, 65, was found dead in a forest area of Kapilvastu on Sunday after being missing since Friday. Police discovered his body in the Gorusinge forest area following an extensive search launched after he lost contact with his family and his motorcycle was later found deep inside the forest. The circumstances surrounding his death have not yet been established in the information made public.

Singh Had Been Missing Since Friday

Singh had been out of contact since Friday after leaving his home in Kapilvastu Municipality-3. According to police information reported during the search, he had left on his motorcycle and was believed to be heading towards an agricultural farm he was preparing in the area.

His disappearance prompted family members, police and local residents to begin searching for him after he failed to return and could no longer be contacted.

Motorcycle Found Deep Inside Forest

The search gained urgency after Singh's motorcycle, bearing registration number Lu Pra 01013 Pa 7970, was discovered parked inside the forest.

The motorcycle was reportedly found roughly eight kilometres from the East-West Highway, while Singh himself was nowhere nearby. Its location led authorities to concentrate their search efforts across the surrounding forest.

Last Known Movements Traced

Investigators also examined Singh's movements before he disappeared. According to information provided by Chief District Officer Janardan Gautam during the search, CCTV footage showed Singh reaching the Ramraj Bridge area at around 3:15 pm on Friday.

Authorities also learned that Singh had contacted a relative and indicated that he had lost his way in the forest. Police were formally informed about his disappearance later that evening.

Large Search Operation Launched

Police intensified the operation after Singh remained missing overnight.

More than 80 police personnel and local residents were reported to have participated in the search. A trained search dog was also brought in from Gautam Buddha International Airport, while authorities used available information, including call details, to help trace his possible location.

Search Ends With Discovery of Body

After days of searching the forest, police located Singh's body on Sunday. Kapilvastu Police Chief SP Manohar Bhatt confirmed that the former mayor had been found dead.

The discovery brought the search operation to a tragic conclusion after uncertainty over Singh's whereabouts since Friday.

Former Mayor and Congress Leader

Singh had previously served as mayor of Kapilvastu Municipality after being elected on a Nepali Congress ticket.

Although his ancestral home was reportedly in Biratnagar, he had been living with his family in Kapilvastu Municipality-3 for a long period.

Cause of Death Not Yet Established

Initial reports confirming the discovery of Singh's body have not established how he died or what happened after he entered the forest.

With his disappearance now confirmed to have ended in his death, further information from police and any subsequent investigation will be important in establishing the circumstances surrounding the incident.
