Two Killed, 10 Missing After Landslide Buries Homes In Rolpa

At least two people have been killed and 10 others are missing after a major landslide triggered by heavy rain buried houses, shops and cattle sheds in Thabang Rural Municipality 5 of Rolpa district.

Two other people were seriously injured in the disaster, while police and local residents are continuing search and rescue efforts in the affected area.

Landslide Strikes Kotlabara Village

The landslide struck Kotlabara in Thabang Rural Municipality 5 at around 8:40 pm on Wednesday.

According to police, heavy rain caused a large section of the hillside to collapse and sweep down towards the settlement. Several houses, shops and cattle sheds were buried under mud and debris.

Around seven families were reportedly living in the structures affected by the landslide.

Authorities fear that more people could still be trapped under the debris as rescue teams continue searching the area.

Two Bodies Recovered

Police and local residents recovered the bodies of two people from the landslide site.

The deceased have been identified as 18 year old Shanti Pun Magar and 67 year old Kamal Bahadur Pun Magar.

Relatives of the victims and local health worker Bimarsh Gharti Magar confirmed that both were caught in the landslide.

Two Seriously Injured

Two other people were seriously injured in the incident.

They have been identified as 22 year old Himal Pun Magar and 25 year old Sanjay Gharti Magar.

Police personnel and local residents rescued the injured from the affected area and sent them towards Sulaichaur for medical treatment.

Their condition was reported to be serious.

10 People Still Missing

Police said at least 10 people remained missing following the landslide.

Search teams are working to locate those who may have been buried under collapsed houses and other structures.

Authorities have also warned that the final number of people affected could change as rescuers reach more areas covered by debris.

Difficult Terrain Slows Rescue Efforts

The remote location and difficult terrain have made rescue work challenging.

Local health worker Bimarsh Gharti Magar said reaching people trapped in the affected area and providing medical treatment has been difficult.

The rescue operation began during the night and continued from early Thursday morning.

Police and local residents have been working together to search through the debris and find missing people.

Police Reached Site During Night

The Area Police Office in Uwa was informed about the landslide at around 9:30 pm on Wednesday.

A police team was immediately sent to the disaster site and arrived at around 10:15 pm.

Police personnel remained in the area throughout the night and continued the search and rescue operation on Thursday morning.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Pancha Kumar Bakhu, chief of Rolpa police, said the operation was continuing and further information would become available as rescuers progressed through the affected area.

Houses, Shops And Cattle Sheds Buried

The landslide caused extensive damage to the settlement, burying residential houses along with shops and cattle sheds.

The full scale of property and livestock losses has not yet been confirmed.

Officials are expected to assess the damage after the immediate search and rescue operation is completed.

Area Considered Vulnerable To Landslides

The affected settlement is located around 80 kilometres northeast of Liwang, the district headquarters of Rolpa.

The wider Uwa area is considered highly vulnerable to landslides, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.

The region has experienced deadly landslides in the past. A landslide in a nearby village several years ago killed at least six people.

Search For Survivors Continues

Police, local residents and rescue personnel are continuing to search for the 10 missing people.

The immediate priority remains finding survivors, providing treatment to the injured and determining whether more people are trapped beneath the debris.

Authorities said further details about casualties, missing people and property damage are expected as the rescue operation continues.
