US Confirms For First Time It Has Deployed Space Weapon In Earth’s Orbit

The United States has confirmed for the first time that it has deployed a space weapon in Earth’s orbit, marking a major development in the growing military use of space.

US Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink confirmed that an “on orbit” weapon has been deployed and said the capability is needed to protect American forces against hostile action.

Speaking at the Air, Space and Cyber Conference, Meink said the United States was preparing for changing threats. However, he did not reveal when the weapon was placed into orbit, how it operates or what specific capabilities it has.

The announcement comes as the United States, China and Russia continue to develop technologies that could play an important role in any future conflict involving satellites and other space systems.

US Says Weapon Is Needed For Protection

US military leaders have previously said the country needs stronger capabilities in space because potential rivals are developing systems that could attack, disrupt or interfere with American satellites.

Satellites are now a critical part of modern military operations. They support communication, surveillance, intelligence gathering, navigation and other services used by armed forces.

A US Space Force spokesperson said space control includes capabilities designed to contest and control operations in space. According to the Space Force, these systems can use kinetic and non kinetic methods to disrupt, weaken or potentially destroy an opponent’s capabilities when necessary.

China responded to the US announcement by warning against an arms race in space.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson called on Washington to stop expanding its military capabilities and preparing for conflict in outer space, according to AFP.

The response highlights growing international concern about the increasing military importance of space.

The United States has repeatedly raised concerns about Chinese and Russian space programmes. US officials say both countries are developing technologies that could threaten satellites and other space infrastructure during a conflict.

China and Russia have also raised concerns about US military activities in space.

Russia And China Under Growing US Focus

The US Space Force says China has been developing space and counterspace capabilities as part of its wider military modernisation programme.

It also says Russia considers space an important area for future military operations.

Concerns about satellite security have increased in recent years.

In 2024, the United States said Russia had launched a satellite that Washington believed could potentially attack other satellites. Russia did not publicly comment on that specific US assessment.

More recently, two Russian satellites were reported to have likely intercepted communications from at least a dozen European satellites since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Such activity could potentially allow sensitive information transmitted through satellites to be collected. However, the exact capabilities and purpose of the Russian satellites have remained a subject of scrutiny.

Space Force Has Expanded US Military Role

The US Space Force was established in 2019 during President Donald Trump’s first administration.

It became the first new branch of the US military in more than 70 years.

Its mission includes protecting American interests and assets in space. The United States operates hundreds of satellites that support civilian and military communication, surveillance, navigation and intelligence operations.

The role of the Space Force has continued to expand as Washington places greater importance on preparing for possible threats beyond Earth.

President Trump has also issued an executive order highlighting the Space Force’s role not only in protecting US assets but also in developing capabilities that could be used against hostile forces.

Space based technology is also expected to play a major role in the Trump administration’s planned “Golden Dome” defence system.

The proposed system is intended to protect the United States against missiles and other airborne threats.

The administration has said space based capabilities and interceptor missiles will be important parts of the planned defence network.

The confirmation that an American space weapon is already in orbit therefore comes as Washington is making space an increasingly important part of its wider defence strategy.
