Nepal Joins Global Financial Discussions

Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle departed for Bangkok, Thailand, on Tuesday, October 13, to represent Nepal at the 2026 Annual Meetings of the World Bank Group and International Monetary Fund (IMF). The meetings are taking place from October 12 to 18 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, bringing together financial leaders to discuss global economic challenges and development priorities. Wagle's visit will provide an opportunity to discuss Nepal's economic needs and strengthen cooperation with international financial institutions.

More Than 16 Meetings Planned

Wagle is scheduled to participate in more than 16 bilateral and multilateral meetings during his visit. His discussions are expected to cover Nepal's economic priorities, development financing, reconstruction and recovery needs, and cooperation with international development partners.

Global Leaders Gather in Bangkok

The annual meetings are expected to attract more than 15,000 participants from 191 countries and territories, including finance ministers, central bank governors, policymakers and business representatives. Major discussions will address global economic growth, financial stability, public debt, investment and development financing.

Why This Visit Matters for Nepal

Nepal is seeking international cooperation to support its economic recovery, infrastructure development and reconstruction needs following recent disasters. The Bangkok meetings will offer an opportunity to present these priorities to development partners and explore potential financial support. However, no new funding commitments or agreements have been confirmed from Wagle's visit.

Officials Accompanying the Minister

Finance Secretary Dr. Ghanshyam Upadhyaya, Joint Secretary Amrit Lamsal, who heads the International Economic Relations Division, and officials Madhav Bhandari and Gajendra Bhattarai are accompanying Wagle. The delegation is scheduled to return to Nepal on October 21, corresponding to Kartik 4.

What Happens Next?

The results of Wagle's discussions will become clearer after the meetings conclude. Whether the engagements lead to new financing arrangements, development partnerships or other commitments will depend on subsequent discussions and official announcements.
