14 Internet Providers Fined Rs 50,000 Each for Overcharging and Unapproved Packages

Kathmandu, October 13, 2026: The Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has fined 14 internet service providers Rs 50,000 each after inspections and investigations found violations involving approved tariffs, internet packages and regulatory directives.

According to the regulator, violations included charging customers above authorized rates, selling packages without approval, failing to provide services according to approved packages and failing to properly notify customers about certain packages.

The penalties were imposed under Section 47(1) of the Telecommunications Act, 1997.

Which Internet Providers Were Fined?

The 14 companies facing regulatory action are:

  1. Broadlink Network and Communication Pvt. Ltd.

  2. Classic Tech

  3. Websurfer Nepal Communication System Pvt. Ltd.

  4. Fiberworld Communication

  5. Vianet Communication

  6. Arrownet Pvt. Ltd.

  7. Dish Media Network Ltd.

  8. Wi-Fi Nepal

  9. CG Communications Ltd.

  10. WorldLink Communications

  11. Firstlink Communication

  12. Pokhara Internet Pvt. Ltd.

  13. Techminds Network Ltd.

  14. Subisu Limited

Each company has been fined Rs 50,000.

What Did the ISPs Do Wrong?

NTA spokesperson Min Prasad Aryal said the action followed inspections and investigations into whether providers were following approved tariffs, packages and their operating licence conditions.

The regulator identified several types of violations, including charging customers more than approved rates and providing internet speeds or services that did not match approved packages.

Some providers were also found to have introduced packages without obtaining the regulator's required approval.

Under NTA's tariff-setting rules, service providers must submit proposed rates for approval at least three months before they are due to take effect, including details of the proposed rates and implementation date.

Unauthorized Packages Must Be Removed

The NTA has ordered the companies to immediately discontinue packages and tariffs introduced without regulatory approval.

The affected providers must also inform the authority after withdrawing such packages.

The regulator has warned all licensed telecommunications providers that new tariffs and service packages require prior approval and must comply with existing laws, regulations and licence conditions.

Overcharged Customers Can Seek Compensation

The decision could also have a direct impact on customers.

According to the NTA, customers who suffered financial or other losses because of unauthorized practices can request compensation or reimbursement from their internet provider.

The regulator has also encouraged consumers to file complaints if they are charged above approved rates or discover other practices that violate telecommunications rules or consumer rights.

NTA Says Internet Tariffs Have Not Been Increased

The enforcement action follows an October 10 clarification from the NTA that internet service charges had not officially been increased.

The authority said at the time that it had not received proposals from service providers seeking tariff increases and had not approved any increase.

It warned internet providers against charging customers more than approved rates and reminded companies that approved tariffs must be made public.

The latest action reinforces the regulator's position that internet providers cannot independently introduce higher prices or unauthorized packages without receiving the required approval.
