A discarded SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket stage has crashed into the Moon in a rare accidental collision between human-made space hardware and the lunar surface.

The 4,000-kilogram rocket part struck the Moon on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at around 06:35 UTC, travelling at an estimated speed of 8,700 km/h.

The impact created a powerful explosion on the lunar surface, releasing dust and debris while giving scientists an unexpected opportunity to study how objects interact with the Moon.

Rocket Stage Traveled Through Space For 19 Months

The rocket stage came from a SpaceX Falcon 9 mission launched on January 15, 2025, from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

The mission carried two commercial lunar landers:

  • Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost-1

  • ispace’s Hakuto-R Mission 2 (Resilience)

After delivering the spacecraft, the Falcon 9 first stage returned to Earth as planned.

However, the upper stage used almost all of its fuel during the mission and was left without enough energy to perform a controlled return into Earth’s atmosphere.

The abandoned hardware continued drifting through space until its orbit brought it toward the Moon.

Astronomers Predicted The Lunar Collision

Independent astronomer Bill Gray, known for developing the Project Pluto orbital calculation software, identified that the object’s orbit was gradually shifting toward a collision course with the Moon.

After months of tracking, scientists confirmed that the rocket stage would eventually strike the lunar surface.

The object, officially catalogued as 2025-010D, remained trapped under the influence of Earth and the Moon’s gravity before reaching its final destination.

Massive Impact At Thousands Of Kilometres Per Hour

The rocket stage hit the Moon’s near side near the Einstein Crater region.

Key details of the impact:

  • Object: Falcon 9 expendable second stage

  • Weight: Around 4 metric tons

  • Length: Approximately 13.8 metres

  • Impact speed: Around 8,700 km/h

  • Energy released: Equivalent to about 3 tons of TNT

  • Estimated crater size: Around 27 metres wide and 5 metres deep

Because the Moon has no atmosphere, the rocket stage did not slow down before impact.

The collision created a large debris plume that scientists estimate could have reached up to 100 kilometres above the lunar surface.

Scientists See Impact As A Research Opportunity

Although the collision was accidental, scientists are treating it as a rare natural experiment.

Space agencies plan to study the newly formed crater and debris from the impact to understand:

  • The composition of underground lunar materials.

  • How impacts reshape the Moon’s surface.

  • How future spacecraft can better track and manage space debris.

NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and South Korea’s Danuri lunar orbiter are expected to observe the impact area and capture high-resolution images.

Lunar Space Debris Raises New Concerns

The incident has renewed discussions about the growing problem of space debris beyond Earth’s orbit.

As more countries and private companies send missions toward the Moon, experts warn that abandoned spacecraft parts could become a future challenge.

Unlike Earth orbit, where international guidelines and tracking systems are more developed, regulations for objects travelling around the Earth-Moon system remain limited.

Scientists say better international cooperation will be needed to prevent lunar space from becoming crowded with abandoned hardware.
