Bhotekoshi Flood-Affected Families to Receive Rs 15,000 Monthly Housing Support Until Permanent Homes Are Built

KATHMANDU: The government has decided to provide monthly housing support to families affected by the Bhotekoshi floods until permanent homes are constructed.

Under the new decision, families with up to four members will receive Rs 15,000 per month to help cover housing and related expenses.

Families with more than four members will receive an additional Rs 2,000 per month for each extra member.

The decision was taken by the Cabinet as part of the government's ongoing relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts for communities affected by the Bhotekoshi disaster.

Rs 15,000 for Families of Up to Four Members

According to Communications Minister Dr. Bikram Timilsina, the Cabinet has approved the housing support scheme for flood-affected families.

The monthly assistance will be structured as follows:

• Up to 4 family members: Rs 15,000 per month

• Each additional member: Rs 2,000 extra per month

• Support will continue until permanent housing is constructed

The assistance is intended to help displaced families manage rent and other necessary expenses while they wait for permanent accommodation.

Larger Families to Receive Additional Support

The government has also included a provision for larger households.

For example, a family of five would receive Rs 17,000 per month, while a family of six would receive Rs 19,000 per month, based on the announced structure.

This approach is intended to account for the additional housing and living costs faced by larger families.

Alternative: Government-Managed Temporary Housing

Families that do not want to receive the monthly cash housing support will have another option.

The government will arrange temporary accommodation for such families until their permanent homes are built.

This means affected families can choose between:

• Receiving monthly housing assistance, or

• Staying in temporary accommodation arranged by the government.

Data Collection Underway

Minister Timilsina said the government has already sent forms to the concerned local governments to collect the necessary details and data on affected families.

The information will be used to identify eligible households and manage the support programme.

Accurate household data will also be important in planning longer-term rehabilitation and permanent housing for families displaced by the floods.

Relief and Reconstruction Remain Government Priority

The government has said that relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction of communities affected by the Bhotekoshi floods remain a high priority.

For families who have lost or been forced to leave their homes, the monthly support is intended to provide some immediate stability while the longer process of rebuilding permanent housing moves forward.

The housing decision comes as authorities continue working on broader plans to relocate and rehabilitate families living in areas considered unsafe after the disaster.
