Empire State Building Spire Climb Leads To Two Arrests
Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus were arrested after reaching the upper spire of the Empire State Building in New York City, an area closed to the public. The pair displayed a large peace message banner, appeared to stage a proposal, and were later taken into custody by police.

Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus, two Russian high-altitude stunt climbers, were arrested on Wednesday in New York City after they climbed to the spire of the Empire State Building, far above the section allowed for public visitors. The incident happened at the famous Midtown Manhattan landmark and drew police attention because of the safety risk, the restricted location, and the large banner the pair displayed from the top.
The two were seen wearing dark clothing and masks while standing near the highest part of the building. They unfolded a large black banner carrying a message about love, power, and peace. The Empire State Building stands 1,454 feet, or 443 meters, above the city, making the climb dangerous and highly visible.
Local reports said the NYPD monitored the scene using a drone and helicopter before the pair moved down to a lower platform near the antenna. Body camera footage later showed officers stopping them and taking them into custody. Police said no injuries were reported.
The investigation is still continuing. CBS News reported that the possible charges include burglary, criminal trespass, and reckless endangerment. Nikolau also shared photos and videos from the top of the skyscraper on Instagram, including pictures connected to the apparent proposal and a ring.
