KATHMANDU: A foundation stone has been laid at the Parliament premises inside Singha Durbar in memory of those who lost their lives during the Gen Z movement of Bhadra 23 and 24, 2082 BS.
The foundation-laying ceremony was held on Sunday morning, bringing together government representatives and family members of those who died during the movement. The memorial is intended to preserve the memory of the young people whose lives were lost during a period that left a deep mark on the country.
Families and Government Representatives Attend Ceremony
Home Minister Sudhan Gurung, Physical Infrastructure Minister Sunil Lamsal, and Rachana Khatriwada, a Rastriya Swatantra Party lawmaker and mother of a Gen Z movement martyr, were among those present at the ceremony.
For the families who lost loved ones, the memorial carries a significance beyond a physical structure. It represents an attempt to keep the memory of those who died alive within a national institution.
The foundation has been laid inside the Parliament premises, where the sacrifices and demands associated with the movement will now have a permanent place of remembrance.
Government Pledges to Respect Gen Z Aspirations
Speaking at the ceremony, Physical Infrastructure Minister Sunil Lamsal said the government remains committed to working according to the wishes and sentiments of Gen Z youths.
He also pledged that the government would move forward to fulfill the dreams, expectations and aspirations associated with the Gen Z movement.
The commitment comes as the government seeks to ensure that the sacrifices made during the movement are not remembered only through a memorial, but also through action.
More Than a Memorial
For the families of the martyrs, remembering their loved ones is deeply personal. For the country, the memorial is also expected to serve as a reminder of the demands and aspirations that brought young people to the streets.
The foundation stone laid at Singha Durbar marks the beginning of that memorial process.
