Government And Garima Chaudhary’s Family Reach Three Point Agreement

The Nepal government and the family of three year old Garima Chaudhary have reached a three point agreement following the serious crime against the child in Bara district. The agreement includes a review of existing laws related to serious crimes and punishments, an initiative to build a statue of Garima, and arrangements for the family to conduct her funeral according to their customs and traditions.

The agreement was reached following discussions held at the Ministry of Home Affairs on Saturday evening. Home Minister Sudhan Gurung, ministers from several related ministries, government representatives and Garima’s parents took part in the talks.

Garima was a three year old girl from Jitpur Simara Sub Metropolitan City 1 in Bara district. Following the crime against her, her family had been seeking justice and action from the government. The latest agreement is aimed at moving the legal process forward while also addressing demands raised by the family.

Seven Member Committee To Review Existing Laws

One of the main points of the agreement focuses on reviewing Nepal’s existing legal provisions related to serious criminal offences and their punishments.

According to the agreement, the government will review the current provisions based on public expectations following serious criminal cases. The review will examine whether changes are needed in the existing laws covering offences and punishments.

For this purpose, the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs will form a seven member committee named the “Garima Nyaya Sankalpa Committee.”

The committee will study the existing legal provisions and prepare recommendations for the formulation or revision of laws. It has been given seven days to submit its report with recommendations.

The decision means the case has also led to a wider discussion about whether Nepal’s current laws and punishments are adequate for serious crimes.

Government To Take Initiative For Garima’s Statue

The second major part of the agreement addresses the family’s request to construct a statue of Garima.

According to the agreement, the Ministry of Infrastructure Development will take the necessary initiative for the construction of the statue. The ministry will coordinate with the concerned local government to move the process forward.

The statue was requested by the victim’s family, and the government has agreed to work with local authorities on the proposal.

Family To Conduct Funeral According To Traditions

The agreement also addresses Garima’s funeral. Her parents will conduct the funeral according to their own customs, traditions and cultural practices.

This was another issue discussed between the family and government representatives during the talks at the Home Ministry.

Five Ministers Sign Agreement

The agreement was signed by five ministers on behalf of the Nepal government.

Home Minister Sudhan Gurung, Infrastructure Development Minister Sunil Lamsal, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sabita Gautam, Minister for Women, Children, Gender and Sexual Minorities and Social Security Sita Badi, and Agriculture, Forest and Environment Minister Gila Chaudhary signed the agreement for the government.

Garima’s father Manoj Kumar Chaudhary and mother Minmati Chaudhary signed the agreement on behalf of the victim’s family.

The agreement commits the government to continue the legal process related to the case and take steps to address the demands raised by Garima’s family.

The formation of the seven member committee is expected to bring the wider issue of laws covering serious crimes and punishments under review. Its recommendations, which are required within seven days, could help guide possible changes to existing legal provisions.

At the same time, the government has agreed to coordinate on the construction of Garima’s statue and allow the family to complete her funeral according to their traditions.

The three point agreement marks an important development in the discussions between the government and Garima’s family as they seek justice and action following the crime against the three year old girl.
