Kailali DSP Called For Clarification After Viral Remarks On Nepal Police
DSP Prasanna Raj Chaudhary of Area Police Office Sukhad has been called to Kailali district headquarters for clarification after his viral remarks on Nepal Police neutrality, and Prime Minister Balendra Shah drew public debate.

KATHMANDU, July 9 — DSP Prasanna Raj Chaudhary, chief of the Area Police Office in Sukhad, Kailali, has been called to the district headquarters for clarification after a video of his remarks during a public drug awareness program organized in Darkha, Ghodaghodi Municipality- 5, went viral on social media, drawing debate over police neutrality, public conduct, and the role of security officials.
Viral Remarks Spark Debate
In the video, DSP Chaudhary is heard saying Nepal Police works for the law and the people, not for any individual or political leader. He said, “We are not Balen’s police, we are Nepal Police,” while stressing that the police are responsible for helping people facing injustice and oppression.
He also referred to former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in his speech, saying the same police force had arrested Oli and that Nepal Police works under the law, not under any person.
Officer Defends Police Neutrality
During the public exchange, Chaudhary said police officers are selected through a formal process and training, not elected through votes.
“We are selected from the best of the best. We are selected, not elected,” he said in the video, suggesting that police officers should act according to law and professional duty rather than political pressure.
His remarks have received mixed reactions online. Some social media users supported his message that Nepal Police should remain independent and neutral, while others said a serving police officer should be more careful with language during public programs.
Called To District Headquarters
According to reports, Kailali Police Chief SP Narendra Chand confirmed that DSP Chaudhary had been called to the district headquarters to provide clarification regarding his public comments.
The police administration is reviewing the matter based on the statement made during the awareness program and the video that circulated online.
Wider Discussion On Police Conduct
The incident has sparked a broader debate over how police officers should communicate in public, particularly when addressing criticism or politically sensitive issues.
While many have praised the DSP's emphasis on police neutrality, others have questioned whether making direct political references while in uniform is appropriate.
Police officials have not announced any further action, and the matter is currently under administrative review.
The video also captures DSP Chaudhary requesting that his remarks at the program not be made public. Despite his request, the footage was later shared widely on social media.
