No More Branch Visits? Global IME Bank Lets Nepalis Open Accounts Directly Through the Nagarik App
Global IME Bank has partnered with the Nagarik App to introduce Nepal's first bank account opening service that allows eligible citizens to begin opening a personal savings account using their National ID through a QR code. The new system is designed to simplify the onboarding process by securely retrieving verified information with the user's consent, reducing paperwork and making banking more accessible.

Global IME Bank has launched a new digital account opening service in partnership with Nepal's Nagarik App, becoming the first bank in the country to integrate the government's digital identity platform directly into the savings account application process. Announced this week in Nepal, the service allows eligible citizens to scan a QR code, securely share their verified National Identity Card information with the bank after giving consent, and begin opening a personal savings account more quickly while reducing the need for repeated manual data entry.
How The New Service Works
Customers who have linked their National Identity Card to the Nagarik App can begin the account opening process by scanning a QR code provided by Global IME Bank. After the customer authorises the request, verified personal details are securely transferred from the government platform to the bank, reducing the amount of information that needs to be entered manually during the application process.
Privacy Remains In The Customer's Control
The service operates on a consent-based system, meaning no personal information is shared automatically. Data is transferred only after the customer explicitly approves the request through the Nagarik App, helping improve both security and the accuracy of customer information.
Account Verification Is Still Required
Although the application starts digitally, customers must still complete the bank's Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements before the account can be fully activated. Depending on eligibility, this can be completed through Video KYC or by visiting a Global IME Bank branch for final verification.
Why The Integration Matters
The partnership represents another step in Nepal's ongoing digital transformation by connecting government-issued digital identity services with the banking sector. By reducing paperwork and allowing verified information to be shared electronically with customer consent, the system has the potential to make banking services more efficient while maintaining regulatory and security requirements.
