PM Balen Shah Submits Medical Report to Explain Wearing Dark Glasses in Parliament

KATHMANDU, AUGUST 25, 2026: Prime Minister Balen Shah has submitted a medical report and letter to the Federal Parliament Secretariat explaining why he needs to wear dark glasses during House meetings.

The report states that Shah has difficulty looking at bright light and suffers from dry eyes. Parliament Secretariat spokesperson Ekram Giri confirmed that the documents have been received.

Eye Examination Conducted at Chhauni Military Hospital

Shah underwent an eye examination at Chhauni Military Hospital on August 7.

Following the examination, Lieutenant Colonel Dr Sachit Dhakal recommended that Shah use eye drops when needed and wear dark glasses because exposure to bright light causes discomfort.

The medical recommendation was submitted to Parliament after concerns were raised about Shah wearing dark glasses inside the House.

Medical Report Submitted After Parliament's Instruction

The move follows a decision by the House Working Procedures Advisory Committee, which said lawmakers could not attend parliamentary meetings wearing dark glasses unless they had a medical reason supported by a health report.

Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal had also instructed lawmakers not to wear dark glasses inside Parliament without a medical justification.

Shah has now provided the required medical documentation to explain his use of the glasses during parliamentary proceedings.

PM Scheduled for Direct Question-and-Answer Session

Shah is scheduled to attend the House meeting on Wednesday for a direct question-and-answer session with lawmakers.

A total of 11 lawmakers are expected to ask the prime minister questions during the session.

Under the House of Representatives Rules 2083, the Speaker can allocate one hour during the first week of every month for lawmakers to directly question the prime minister on important matters related to the prime minister's responsibilities.
