PM Balen Visits Flood-Hit Nuwakot, Orders Immediate Relief And Faster Infrastructure Restoration

Prime Minister Balendra Shah visited Bidur and nearby flood-affected areas of Nuwakot on Thursday, August 27, to personally assess the destruction caused by Wednesday’s devastating Bhote Koshi flood and review ongoing rescue, relief and recovery efforts. Shah travelled from Kathmandu by road at around 9:30 AM with Infrastructure Development Minister Sunil Lamsal, inspected damaged settlements and infrastructure, met affected and injured people, and spoke with local authorities and security officials to understand what communities need immediately.

PM Inspects Damage On The Ground

Shah inspected Bidur and surrounding settlements after floodwaters from the Bhote Koshi disaster in Rasuwa travelled downstream and caused serious damage in Nuwakot.

The Prime Minister reviewed damage to roads, settlements and other physical infrastructure rather than relying only on reports from Kathmandu. Bidur, Betrawati, Trishuli and Devighat are among the Nuwakot areas reported to have been affected.

Meets Victims And Injured People

During the visit, Shah met flood-affected families, local residents and people injured in the disaster to hear about conditions on the ground.

The visit came a day after the flood, as rescue teams continued searching affected areas and communities faced damage to homes, roads and essential infrastructure.

Emergency Briefing In Bidur

Shah also attended a briefing with senior officials at the No. 1 Military Training Centre in Bidur Municipality.

Infrastructure Minister Sunil Lamsal, Information and Communication Minister Bikram Timilsina, Bagmati Province Chief Minister Kiran Thapa Magar and Chief of Army Staff Ashok Raj Sigdel were among those present. Nuwakot Chief District Officer Shambu Prasad Regmi and District Police Chief Bipin Regmi briefed officials about casualties and physical damage.

Immediate Relief For Displaced Families

Following the assessment, Shah instructed the local administration and concerned government agencies to provide immediate relief to families displaced by the flood.

The direction puts emergency assistance and support for people forced from their homes among the government's immediate priorities as rescue and recovery operations continue.

Blocked Roads To Be Reopened Quickly

The Prime Minister also directed authorities to restore blocked roads and damaged essential infrastructure as quickly as possible.

Roads, bridges, electricity and other critical infrastructure have been disrupted in flood-affected areas, making access and relief operations more difficult. Authorities have been told to speed up restoration and reconstruction work.

Rehabilitation And Reconstruction Ordered

Beyond immediate rescue and relief, Shah instructed agencies to accelerate longer-term rehabilitation and reconstruction in communities damaged by the disaster.

The government now faces the larger task of restoring access, rebuilding infrastructure and helping displaced families return to safer and more stable conditions.

Balen Returns To Kathmandu

After completing the inspection and issuing instructions, Prime Minister Shah returned to Kathmandu on Thursday.

A later report said Infrastructure Minister Sunil Lamsal remained in Nuwakot, where the Nepal Army briefed him on search-and-rescue progress. Lamsal instructed authorities to make further efforts to strengthen the immediate response.
