U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited tensions with Iran after sharing a map on Truth Social that labeled the strategically important Strait of Hormuz as “NEW U.S. TERRITORY.” The post came after Trump said on August 14 that he would “soon” declare the waterway U.S. territory. However, the latest social media post did not include any explanation or formal announcement of a change in the strait’s legal status.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important shipping routes because large amounts of oil and natural gas pass through it. Tensions have risen sharply as the United States and Iran remain locked in a wider conflict over control of the waterway. Trump has previously claimed that the U.S. has “total control” over the strait, while Iran has strongly rejected any U.S. territorial claim.
Iranian officials have said the Strait of Hormuz cannot simply be taken over through a social media post, military power or an executive order. Tehran has also maintained that it controls decisions over access to the waterway. Iranian officials have said the strait will remain closed until their demands, including an end to the U.S. blockade and other military and economic pressures, are addressed.
The dispute has also raised concerns beyond the United States and Iran because any prolonged disruption in the Strait of Hormuz can affect global energy supplies, shipping costs and fuel prices. The waterway is a major route for international oil and gas trade, meaning continued tensions could create wider economic pressure.
Trump’s latest post comes at a sensitive moment, with Washington saying there are currently no planned talks with Tehran while Iran continues to demand changes before reopening the waterway. The growing confrontation over Hormuz is therefore not only a territorial dispute but also a major issue for global trade, energy security and Middle East stability.
