KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has announced that the party will provide at least Rs 1.2 crore in relief support to people affected by the recent floods.
Speaking while receiving relief collected by the UML Capital Province Committee on Monday, Oli said the Kathmandu and Bagmati Province committees had already provided Rs 10 lakh each, bringing the initial contribution to Rs 20 lakh.
He said the party plans to collect a total of at least Rs 1.2 crore and spend at least that amount from the party's central fund for flood relief.
UML Considering Direct Relief Or Government Fund
Oli said the party is currently considering whether to send the collected money directly to flood victims or deposit it into the government's Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund.
He said the main priority should be ensuring that relief reaches people who are actually affected by the disaster as quickly as possible.
“We will take the route through which relief can reach the real victims quickly and effectively,” Oli said.
Oli also noted that depositing the money into the government fund could create public expectations that UML should contribute through the same channel. However, he stressed that the purpose of the support is to help people affected by the disaster.
Focus On People Directly Affected
Oli said many flood victims are still facing serious difficulties and that relief should not remain limited to funds or official records.
He questioned whether it would be more effective to show the contribution in the government fund or ensure that essential assistance reaches families in need on the ground.
The UML chairman said the party would continue supporting rescue and relief efforts and urged others to contribute generously during the disaster.
UML To Coordinate With Government
Oli said UML wants to work in coordination with the government during the disaster rather than operate separately.
He said the party would continue its efforts to support people affected by the floods and help strengthen relief operations.
