19-Day Captivity and Rape Case Involving 16-Year-Old Girl: Main Accused Sent to Jail for Trial, Ward Chair Released on Bail

JANAKPUR: The main accused in a case involving the alleged abduction, 19-day captivity, and r@pe of a 16-year-old girl in Janakpur has been sent to jail for trial by the Dhanusha District Court.

Tahir Rain, 23, was ordered into custody on Bhadra 26 and has since been sent to prison, according to the District Police Office, Dhanusha.

The case involves allegations of abduction, human trafficking, unlawful confinement and rape, with around a dozen people named as accused across two related cases.

Main Accused Brought Back Through Interpol

Rain allegedly fled Nepal and travelled to Qatar following the incident.

He was later arrested through Interpol and brought back to Nepal on August 9.

Following the court's order, he has now been sent to jail while the case proceeds through trial.

The court's order at this stage is not a final verdict. The allegations and evidence will be examined during the ongoing judicial process.

Ward Chair Released on Rs 100,000 Bail

Yakub Kawari, ward chair of Dhanauji Rural Municipality–5, was also arrested based on the victim's statement.

Kawari was accused of allegedly pressuring the parties to settle the case for Rs 2 million.

The Dhanusha District Court ordered his release on Rs 100,000 bail. He was released after depositing the required amount.

Alleged 19-Day Captivity

According to the case details, the 16-year-old girl was allegedly abducted from her home in Dhanauji Rural Municipality on June 17, 2025, and taken to Janakpur.

She was allegedly held for 19 days across two hotels.

The case file states that:

• She was allegedly kept for two days at Hotel CFC in Pidari Chowk.

• She was then allegedly kept for 17 days at Madhesh Province Guest House in Murali Chowk.

• The case alleges that she was sexually assaulted during the period of confinement.

• Hotel operators and other individuals have also been named as accused.

Two police personnel are among those accused in the related cases.

Earlier Allegations Against Rain

The case also relates to an earlier alleged incident.

According to the complaint, on March 29, 2025, Rain allegedly took the girl from near her home while her mother was away in the fields, allegedly on the promise of marriage.

She was allegedly taken to Janakpur, where the complaint alleges she was sexually assaulted and taken to hotels.

The girl later escaped and filed a complaint at the District Police Office, Dhanusha, on May 16, 2025.

The report states that Rain subsequently fled abroad.

Girl Allegedly Abducted Again

The complaint alleges that the girl was abducted again on June 17, 2025, at around 4:00 AM.

According to the complaint, she had stepped outside her home to tie up goats when three people, including Anjali Mahar, allegedly arrived in a vehicle and abducted her after covering her eyes.

She was allegedly taken to Janakpur and held in the two hotels for a total of 19 days.

Two Related Cases Filed

Police have registered two separate cases in connection with the incidents.

They relate to allegations including:

• Human trafficking

• Abduction

• Unlawful confinement

• Rape

Around a dozen people have been named as accused across the cases, including two police personnel.

Most of the accused are reportedly still at large.

Victim Remains in Safe House

The girl has remained in a safe house since the incident due to concerns over security and pressure surrounding the case.

The ongoing proceedings have also drawn attention to the need to protect survivors and minors throughout the investigation and court process.

This Is Not a Final Verdict

The latest court order concerns pre-trial proceedings.

Sending Rain to jail and releasing Kawari on bail do not by themselves establish guilt or innocence. The court will continue to examine the evidence and allegations before reaching a final decision.
