Rastriya Swatantra Party MP Ashika Tamang has donated an amount equal to her one month's parliamentary salary to the family of Ganesh Nepali to help cover funeral and mourning expenses. The support comes days after the 25-year-old ride-hailing driver from Mugu died after setting himself on fire outside the Department of Passports in Tripureshwor, Kathmandu.
This incident sparked nationwide concern over the treatment of citizens by public authorities. Tamang said the family deserves long-term support and urged the government to fully honor its commitments.
Why The Incident Shocked Nepal
Ganesh Nepali died after self-immolating following a dispute with Kathmandu Metropolitan City police over his motorcycle. His death triggered widespread public outrage, with many demanding accountability, an independent investigation, and reforms to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Government's Nine-Point Commitment
Following discussions with the family, the government signed a nine-point agreement promising to establish an independent investigation committee led by a retired judge, arrange employment for Nepali's wife through Kathmandu Metropolitan City based on her qualifications, provide free education for his daughter through higher education, extend financial assistance to the family, and cover funeral and health-related expenses.
Ashika Tamang stressed that immediate financial help alone is not enough, calling on the government to ensure every promise made to the family is implemented. Her appeal has added momentum to growing public demands for justice, accountability, and meaningful long-term support for Ganesh Nepali's family.
