Flood Sweeps Away Four Houses And Suspension Bridge In Gorkha’s Chumanubri

A flood in the Therang River in Gorkha district’s Chumanubri Rural Municipality swept away four houses and a suspension bridge on Sunday morning, affecting local movement and creating problems along the Manaslu trekking route. No human casualties have been reported so far.

The flood affected areas around wards 4 and 2 of Chumanubri Rural Municipality, a remote mountainous region of Gorkha district.

According to the District Police Office, four houses in Chumanubri Ward 4 were swept away by the floodwaters. The houses belonged to Namrungkanurvu Ongyal, also known as Nurvu Chhiring, Urgen Chhoiden, Lhakpa Bhuti and Dorje Gyaljen.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Rajkumar Shrestha, chief of the District Police Office, said there were no reports of human casualties from the flood.

Local residents were able to move to safer areas after learning about the flood, helping prevent possible loss of life.

Suspension Bridge Swept Away

The flood also swept away a suspension bridge in the affected area, creating difficulties for local residents and people travelling through the region.

The loss of the bridge is also expected to affect tourists travelling along the Manaslu trekking route. The Manaslu region is a popular trekking destination, and suspension bridges provide important connections along routes in the mountainous area.

With the bridge no longer available, movement through the affected section of the trekking route is expected to become more difficult.

Chumanubri Rural Municipality Chairman Nima Lama said local residents could find a temporary solution for crossing the area on foot.

Mud And Floodwater Cause Damage

Assistant Chief District Officer Netra Prasad Sharma said the floodwater came with mud after the river had been blocked for some time towards its mouth.

When the blocked water was released, the flood carrying mud caused damage downstream, including the destruction of houses and the suspension bridge.

The full level of damage in the affected area was not immediately clear.

Budhi Gandaki Residents Urged To Stay Alert

Authorities have also urged people living near the Budhi Gandaki River to remain alert following the flood.

The Therang River flows into the Budhi Gandaki, raising concern about possible effects further downstream. Residents living close to the river have therefore been advised to remain cautious and closely monitor the situation.

While no human casualties have been reported so far, the destruction of four houses and the suspension bridge has affected local families, transportation and access through the area.

The damage to the bridge is particularly important for both local movement and the Manaslu trekking route. Local authorities are expected to rely on temporary arrangements to support movement until a more permanent solution can be made. Authorities continue to monitor the situation.
