Nepal Waives Airport Fees to Attract International Airlines to Pokhara

The Government of Nepal has decided to waive several airport fees at Pokhara International Airport in an effort to attract more international airlines and expand global air connectivity.

The Cabinet approved the decision on Wednesday, granting international airlines a full exemption from parking, landing, and navigation fees until the end of Bhadra 2085. The government has also announced a 50 percent discount on ground handling charges, making operations at the airport more affordable for airlines.

The move comes as Nepal seeks to increase regular international flights from Pokhara, which has remained underused since opening despite being one of the country's largest aviation projects.

Airport Fee Discounts

International airlines operating from Pokhara International Airport will receive the following benefits:

• 100% waiver of parking fees

• 100% waiver of landing fees

• 100% waiver of navigation fees

• 50% discount on ground handling charges

• Fee exemptions remain valid until the end of Bhadra 2085

Fly Dubai to Begin Daily Flights

The government’s decision comes ahead of Fly Dubai's planned launch of daily direct flights between Dubai and Pokhara, scheduled to begin from Ashwin 7.

According to Pokhara International Airport General Manager Jagannath Niraula, Fly Dubai has already opened ticket bookings after receiving approval for its Dubai Pokhara Dubai flight schedule.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal had granted Fly Dubai permission for daily operations last Jestha.

Boost for Tourism and International Travel

Pokhara Metropolitan City Mayor Dhanraj Acharya said the government's decision is expected to encourage more airlines to operate from the airport and strengthen Nepal's tourism industry.

Direct flights to Dubai will provide passengers with easier access to one of the world's busiest international aviation hubs. Travelers heading to Europe, America, and other global destinations will be able to connect through Dubai while reducing travel time and travel costs.

The new service is also expected to benefit Nepali workers traveling abroad, students studying overseas, tourists visiting Nepal, and passengers traveling to Arab countries.

Airport Awaits International Growth

Although Pokhara International Airport has been operational for three years, it has not been able to establish regular international passenger services. Apart from a limited number of charter flights to neighboring countries, the airport has mainly handled domestic operations.

Built with nearly Rs 22 billion in loans, the airport is expected to play a much larger role in Nepal's aviation sector once regular international airlines begin operating.

The government's latest incentive package is seen as an important step toward improving the airport's international connectivity and increasing tourism and economic activity in the Pokhara region.
