Rescue Attempt Ends In Tragedy

JEJU, August 9, 2026 — A 32-year-old Nepali worker identified as Bikash Sherpa from Taplejung and a Vietnamese colleague died following an accident at a pig farm in Hangyeong-myeon, Jeju, South Korea, on Saturday morning. The incident unfolded after the Vietnamese worker entered a manure and wastewater tank to check equipment and encountered trouble, prompting Sherpa to go inside in an apparent effort to help him. Emergency responders later brought both men out in cardiac arrest, and authorities are now investigating what caused the deaths and whether hazardous conditions inside the tank contributed to the tragedy.

Routine Work Turns Into an Emergency

The incident began while work was being carried out around a waste-treatment facility at the pig farm.

According to reports, the Vietnamese worker went inside the tank to inspect an underwater pump. Something went wrong while he was inside, leaving him unable to get out safely.

Sherpa subsequently entered the same confined space in an effort to assist his colleague.

Both Workers Became Trapped Inside

What began as an attempt to help another worker quickly developed into a second emergency.

The tank was approximately five metres long, five metres wide and five metres deep and contained a significant amount of manure and wastewater at the time of the incident.

Conditions inside such enclosed facilities can become extremely dangerous, but investigators have not yet announced the exact factor that caused the two men to lose consciousness.

Emergency Teams Rush to the Farm

South Korean emergency services received a call reporting the accident on Saturday morning and dispatched rescuers to the farm.

Fire and rescue personnel worked to retrieve the two men from inside the tank. They were eventually brought out roughly 50 minutes after the emergency was reported.

Both workers were already in cardiac arrest when rescuers reached them.

Workers Die Despite Hospital Treatment

Emergency personnel immediately attempted resuscitation before the two workers were transported to a hospital.

Despite efforts to save them, both men were later pronounced dead.

The incident turned what appears to have begun as equipment inspection work into a fatal workplace accident involving two migrant workers from different countries.

Toxic Gas Among Possibilities Being Examined

Authorities have not yet announced a definitive cause of death.

Investigators are examining the conditions inside the tank and circumstances leading to the accident. One possibility being considered is whether the workers were exposed to dangerous gases that can accumulate in enclosed waste-treatment facilities.

Until the investigation is completed, however, toxic gas exposure should not be treated as the confirmed cause of their deaths.

Workplace Safety Under Investigation

The investigation is also expected to establish how the workers entered the confined tank and what safety procedures were in place at the farm.

Questions surrounding protective equipment, ventilation, entry procedures and emergency response measures are particularly important in accidents involving enclosed waste facilities because conditions can become dangerous without obvious warning.

Authorities will determine whether required workplace safety measures were properly followed in this case.

A Rescue Attempt That Cost Two Lives

The most tragic element of the incident is the sequence in which the accident reportedly unfolded.

Sherpa was not initially the worker carrying out the inspection inside the tank. He entered after his Vietnamese colleague encountered difficulty, apparently attempting to rescue him.

Instead, both workers ultimately became victims of the same emergency.

Investigation Now Holds the Answers

South Korean authorities are continuing to examine the scene and circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Their findings will be important in determining exactly what happened inside the tank, whether hazardous gases or another factor caused the workers to collapse, and whether adequate precautions had been taken before anyone entered the confined space.

For now, the incident has left two migrant workers dead after an apparent rescue attempt at a workplace thousands of kilometres from their respective homes.
