Nepal Trade Report FY 2082/83: Imports Rise While Exports Grow 18 Percent With Palm Oil And Cardamom Leading Growth

Nepal’s foreign trade pattern in fiscal year 2082/83 shows a changing economic trend, with higher spending on several major imported goods while exports recorded significant growth in key products. The latest trade data indicates that Nepal’s top imported items saw increased values compared to the previous fiscal year, while the total export value of major products also expanded by 18 percent.

The data reflects growing demand for technology products, vehicles, industrial raw materials and precious metals on the import side, while processed agricultural products, edible oils and traditional export items contributed to export growth.

Import Trend: Higher Spending On Silver, Vehicles, Mobile Phones And Fuel

Compared to FY 2081/82, most of Nepal’s major imported goods recorded an increase in import value during FY 2082/83.

Among the top imported goods, silver recorded the highest increase, with its import value rising by 366.1 percent. The sharp rise indicates a significant increase in spending on silver imports compared to the previous year.

The import value of motorcycles (unassembled) increased by 64.4 percent, showing continued demand for two-wheelers in the Nepali market.

Similarly, technology-related imports also expanded, with mobile phone import value increasing by 33 percent. The rise reflects continued consumer demand for smartphones and digital devices.

Energy-related imports also recorded growth:

  • Diesel import value increased by 33.9 percent

  • Petrol import value increased by 20.5 percent

  • LPG gas import value decreased by 3.7 percent

Industrial and manufacturing-related imports also saw growth:

  • Pure iron: +20 percent

  • Crude soybean oil: +21.9 percent

  • Ready-made clothes: +8 percent

  • HR sheets: -6.6 percent (decreased)

The data shows that Nepal’s import bill continued to be influenced by fuel, technology products, vehicles, industrial materials, and consumer goods.

Export Growth: Major Boost From Processed Palm Oil And Cardamom

Nepal’s export sector grew in FY 2082/83, with the combined export value of the top 10 major exported goods rising from Rs. 18,169 crore in FY 2081/82 to Rs. 21,433 crore in FY 2082/83.

This represents an increase of around 18 percent.

The biggest contributor to export growth was processed palm oil, whose export value increased by 246.7 percent.

Another major growth product was cardamom, with exports rising by 64.6 percent.

Other products that recorded export growth include:

  • Processed soybean oil: +20.6 percent

  • Jamothe fabric: +16.2 percent

  • Jute woven fabric: +15.3 percent

  • Synthetic yarn: +8.5 percent

  • Ready-made clothes: +5.4 percent

The rise in processed oil exports played a major role in improving Nepal’s export performance during the year.

Some Export Items Witness Decline

Despite overall export growth, some major products recorded a decline.

Export value decreased for:

  • Processed sunflower oil: -27.4 percent

  • Wool carpet: -2.5 percent

  • Fruit juice: -0.7 percent

The decline shows that growth was concentrated in certain products, while some traditional and processed goods faced challenges.

What The Data Shows

The FY 2082/83 trade figures highlight two major trends in Nepal’s economy:

1. Changing Import Consumption Pattern

Nepal saw increased spending on products such as silver, motorcycles, mobile phones, petroleum products and industrial materials. This reflects stronger demand for consumer goods, transportation and production-related inputs.

2. Export Growth Driven By Specific Products

Export growth was largely supported by processed palm oil, soybean oil and cardamom. While overall exports improved, dependence on a limited number of products remains visible.

Key Numbers At A Glance

Exports

  • Top 10 export value: Rs 21,433 crore

  • Growth from previous year: 18%

  • Highest growth product: Processed Palm Oil (+246.7%)

Imports

  • Highest increase: Silver (+366.1%)

  • Motorcycle imports: +64.4%

  • Mobile phones: +33%

Nepal’s FY 2082/83 trade data shows a market where consumer demand, energy needs and industrial requirements continue to shape imports, while processed agricultural and manufacturing products are becoming increasingly important drivers of exports. The challenge ahead remains strengthening export diversity while managing rising dependence on imported goods.
