New Re. 1 And Rs. 2 Coins Approved As Cabinet Unveils Seven Major Decisions
The Cabinet has approved the minting of newly designed Re. 1 and Rs. 2 coins, authorizing Nepal Rastra Bank to begin production, while also forming a high-level negotiation team to address the concerns of loan shark victims. Other decisions include accepting a USD 1.81 million South Korean grant for a legal information system, approving new staff structures across government agencies, and endorsing measures related to forests, contract employees and the Policy Research Institute.

The Government of Nepal, during a Cabinet meeting held on Thursday at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers in Singha Durbar, Kathmandu, approved seven major decisions aimed at strengthening public administration, improving governance and addressing ongoing public concerns. The decisions include permission for Nepal Rastra Bank to mint newly designed Re. 1 and Rs. 2 coins, the formation of a government negotiation team for loan shark victims, acceptance of an international grant, and several administrative reforms.
New Re. 1 And Rs. 2 Coins Approved
The Cabinet authorized Nepal Rastra Bank to produce new designs for Re. 1 and Rs. 2 coins. While the government has approved the minting process, it has not yet disclosed the appearance of the redesigned coins or announced when they will be released into circulation.
Team Formed To Hold Talks With Loan Shark Victims
To address the long-running concerns of people affected by illegal lending practices, the Cabinet formed a five-member negotiation team led by Prime Minister's Office Secretary Pushkar Sapkota. The team also includes joint secretaries from the Ministries of Finance, Home Affairs, Land Management, and Federal Affairs, and has been tasked with holding formal discussions with victims and working toward practical solutions.
South Korea Grant Accepted
The government also accepted a USD 1.81 million grant from the Republic of Korea to support the implementation of a pilot integrated legal information system. The project is expected to strengthen digital access to legal information and improve the efficiency of justice-related services.
Administrative And Policy Decisions
Other Cabinet decisions include approving organizational structures and staffing positions for several ministries and government agencies, endorsing proposals related to protected forest management, extending provisions concerning contract employees, and approving matters linked to the Policy Research Institute to support policy development and public sector management.
