PepsiCola Football Ground Being Upgraded With Artificial Turf
Kathmandu Metropolitan City is upgrading the PepsiCola football ground in Ward 32 into an 11-a-side artificial turf field, with sand filling, drainage and foot track work still remaining.

KATHMANDU — Kathmandu Metropolitan City is upgrading the PepsiCola football ground in Ward 32 into an 11-a-side artificial turf field, with turf carpet installation already completed and sand filling work still remaining.
According to Arjun Aryal, an engineer at KMC’s Public Works Department, the remaining work, including sand filling, is expected to take up to two more months. The project agreement requires the work to be completed by Mangsir.
Sand Filling Yet To Be Completed
Aryal said the turf carpet has already been laid, but sand still needs to be filled over the surface.
“The carpet has to be filled with sand. Sand filling takes time during cold weather,” Aryal said. “The agreement says the work should be completed by Mangsir. It should now be completed within two months at most.”
Why Sand Is Used On Artificial Turf
According to Aryal, sand is used on artificial turf to prevent waterlogging, increase durability, and make the field more comfortable for players.
Artificial grass is made from plastic fibers. Sand helps keep those fibers upright and stable, preventing the turf from folding, flattening, or being pulled out easily.
It also makes the surface softer, reducing the risk of injuries when players run or fall. Sand filling also helps the ball move and bounce more naturally, similar to a grass field.

Drainage And Foot Track Planned
KMC is also preparing to build drainage channels and a foot track around the field. The drainage system will help rainwater flow out quickly and prevent water from collecting on the ground.
Officials say this will make the field easier to use during different weather conditions and help protect the turf from damage.
Six Grounds Being Upgraded
Kathmandu Metropolitan City started the process in fiscal year 2081/82 to upgrade dusty and unmanaged football grounds using artificial turf.
Along with PepsiCola, turf football grounds are also being developed in five other locations: Bansbari, Social Ground in Nayabazar, Bagmati Corridor in Balkhu, and Ganeshthan in Chabahil, among others.
The contract for upgrading and constructing all six grounds was awarded to JSS/SM JV, Gyaneshwar, at a cost of Rs. 6.80 crore.
The project is expected to improve local sports infrastructure and provide players with safer and more organized football grounds inside Kathmandu.
