Landslides Shut Key Highways as Heavy Rain Disrupts Travel Across Nepal

Continuous monsoon rainfall has caused serious transport disruption across Nepal, with landslides and flooding blocking more than 15 locations on the country’s strategic highway network. The Department of Roads said several important routes have become unsafe, forcing authorities to restrict travel as heavy rain continues in many areas.

Narayangadh Muglin Highway Closed

The Narayangadh Muglin Highway, the main road connecting Kathmandu with southern and western Nepal, has been closed until further notice. The Chitwan District Administration Office stopped all vehicle movement after landslides blocked several points. Falling rocks, debris flows, and continuous rain have also made road clearing difficult.

Alternative Kathmandu Routes Shut

Authorities have also closed two alternative highways connecting Kathmandu Valley with Hetauda because of landslides and swollen rivers. People have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, while those heading toward Kathmandu from western Nepal have been asked not to travel beyond Chitwan until conditions improve.

Roads, Tourism and Hydropower Affected

The heavy rain has damaged roads and bridges, cut off access to the trekking village of Ghandruk, and stranded hundreds of tourists. Four hydropower plants along the Modi River have also stopped electricity generation because of dangerous river conditions and damage linked to the rainfall.

More Heavy Rain Expected

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has warned that heavy rain and thunderstorms will continue through Wednesday. Koshi Province may receive heavy to very heavy rain, while Madhesh, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini are also expected to receive widespread rainfall. Authorities have warned of floods, landslides, debris flows, and river flooding, urging people in high risk areas to remain alert.
