Sanepa Becomes A Green Model Along Kathmandu's Ring Road
Sanepa in Lalitpur has transformed into one of the greenest stretches along Kathmandu Valley's Ring Road after trees planted about seven years ago matured into a dense urban canopy. The success highlights how long-term plantation and regular maintenance can improve air quality, beautify cities, and create more comfortable public spaces despite ongoing Ring Road expansion works.

Sanepa, a neighbourhood in Lalitpur Metropolitan City, has become a successful example of urban greening in 2026along the Koteshwor–Kalanki section of Kathmandu Valley's Ring Road. While the second phase of the Ring Road expansion continues to face delays, trees planted around 2019 through the joint efforts of Lalitpur Metropolitan City and partner agencies have grown into a lush green corridor, improving the area's appearance, providing shade, reducing pollution, and demonstrating the value of long-term urban plantation and maintenance.

The greenery now stands in sharp contrast to many other parts of the Ring Road, where construction materials, dust, smoke, and unfinished roadworks continue to affect daily life. The mature roadside trees help lower surface temperatures, improve air quality by trapping dust and pollutants, reduce noise, and offer shade for pedestrians, cyclists, and commuters, especially during the summer months.

Lalitpur Metropolitan City has identified urban greenery as a long-term priority and continues plantation programmes along roadsides, riverbanks, open spaces, and landslide-prone areas. The metropolis is also working with private organisations through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives and environmental programmes such as the Clean Air Project to expand green spaces and improve the city's resilience to pollution and climate change. Urban planners and environmental experts increasingly view Sanepa as a model showing how consistent planning, tree care, and public cooperation can create cleaner, cooler, and more liveable cities.
