The Nepali Army was sent to Kaptanganj in Dewanganj Rural Municipality-3, Sunsari, on Monday after protesters continued demonstrating despite an indefinite curfew. Authorities said the deployment became necessary after crowds allegedly set vehicles and property on fire and vandalised public areas following a deadly clash between two communities that had already left one person dead and many others injured.

How The Situation Turned Violent

The unrest traces back to Sunday night when an argument broke out during a religious procession. According to officials, a dispute over loud music being played during the event quickly attracted larger groups from both communities. What started as a disagreement soon escalated into stone-pelting, confrontations and widespread violence, making it difficult for security personnel to contain the situation.

The Background Behind The Conflict

Investigators believe the confrontation was not caused by a single incident alone. Local authorities say tensions had been building in the area for some time, with disagreements surrounding the display of religious flags adding to mistrust between members of the two communities. The dispute during the procession ultimately became the spark that ignited the violence.

Police Response And Casualties

As clashes intensified, police first attempted to disperse the crowd using non-lethal measures. When the situation continued to deteriorate, officers opened fire. During the operation, 24-year-old Om Prakash Mehta, a resident of Dewanganj-3, was fatally shot. Nine civilians sustained bullet injuries, with one remaining in critical condition. Overall, more than 22 people, including both civilians and security personnel, were injured and are receiving treatment at hospitals in Biratnagar.

Curfew Could Not Stop The Protests

Following the violence, the Sunsari District Administration enforced an indefinite curfew across five sensitive locations and restricted public gatherings in parts of Dewanganj and neighbouring Harinagar Rural Municipality. Even after the restrictions came into effect, groups continued protesting in several places, prompting authorities to mobilise the Nepali Army to support Nepal Police in restoring order.

Security has now been strengthened throughout the affected areas as officials work to prevent further violence.
