World Cup Night Turns Fatal: What Happened Inside a Bhaktapur Hotel?
A 27-year-old man, Raj Karki, died during treatment after a dispute reportedly escalated into a fight involving several groups at a hotel in Ghyampedanda, Bhaktapur. Police have questioned around 30 people, but no suspect had been arrested at the time of the initial report, while a postmortem was expected to help establish the exact cause of death.

Football Gathering Ends in Tragedy
A gathering to watch the FIFA World Cup final ended in tragedy when 26-year-old Raj Karki, originally from Bardiya and living in Sallaghari, died following a clash at a hotel in Ghyampedanda, Suryabinayak Municipality–7, Bhaktapur. The incident occurred on the morning of Shrawan 4, when a disagreement reportedly broke out among several groups watching football and eating at the hotel. Police believe the dispute escalated into physical violence, while the exact reason behind the confrontation remains under investigation.
Victim Dies During Treatment
Karki was seriously affected during the confrontation and was taken to Madhyapur Hospital for treatment. He died at the hospital on Monday, according to DSP Deepak Karki of the District Police Complex, Bhaktapur.
Authorities have not yet publicly confirmed the exact injury or medical complication that caused his death. A postmortem examination is expected to provide clearer information.
Several Groups Involved
Preliminary police information suggests the argument developed into a wider clash involving people from approximately three or four groups at the hotel.
Investigators are examining how the disagreement began, how many individuals directly participated in the assault, and what role each person present played in the incident.
Eighteen People Arrested
Police have arrested 18 people on suspicion of involvement in the confrontation. The suspects have been presented before the appropriate authority, and police have received additional time to keep them in custody while the investigation continues.
The arrests represent a significant development from the initial report, which stated that around 30 people had been questioned. The larger number appears to have included witnesses, hotel workers, friends and other individuals present during the incident.
Police Screening Suspects
Bhaktapur police have said they will screen the detained individuals and file cases only against those whose involvement can be supported by evidence.
An arrest during an investigation does not automatically mean that all 18 individuals will face criminal charges. Police must determine who directly assaulted Karki, who encouraged or assisted the violence, and who may have only been present at the scene.
Evidence Under Examination
Investigators are expected to examine witness statements, hotel records, telephone information and any available CCTV footage to reconstruct the events inside the hotel.
Police will also compare the statements given by those arrested with accounts from hotel employees, customers and Karki’s friends.
Postmortem May Establish Cause
Karki’s body was taken to KMC Hospital in Duvakot for a postmortem examination. The initial Ratopati report stated that no clearly visible injuries were found on the outside of his body.
However, the absence of obvious external wounds does not determine the cause of death. The postmortem may establish whether Karki suffered internal trauma, a head injury, breathing complications, or another condition associated with the confrontation.
Murder Charges Not Yet Finalized
Police are investigating the incident as a death connected to physical violence, but the final charges will depend on the medical report and evidence establishing each suspect’s actions.
Investigators must determine whether the death resulted from a deliberate fatal assault, collective violence, an unintended injury during the clash, or another cause.
Questions Remain Unanswered
Several questions remain unresolved, including what triggered the initial dispute, who first used physical violence and how many people directly attacked Karki.
It is also unclear whether hotel security attempted to stop the clash, whether working surveillance cameras recorded the incident, and how quickly Karki received medical assistance.
Investigation Continues
Police Station Jagati and the District Police Complex, Bhaktapur, are continuing the investigation. Further details are expected after the postmortem report is received and police complete the screening of the 18 detained individuals.
The case has drawn public attention because a routine football-viewing gathering ended with the death of a young man and a large-scale police investigation involving several groups.
